Three persons have been confirmed dead following an ambush on operatives of the Osun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps.

DAILY POST gathered that the Amotekun operatives were ambushed while responding to a distress call from Akinlalu, a community in the Ile-Ife area of the state.

Parts of the statement read: “Amotekun operatives stationed in Ile-Ife were dispatched after residents of Akinlalu raised an alarm over the invasion of farmlands by suspected bandits. The four-man team was mobilised on motorcycles to secure the area and ensure the safety of residents.

“While en route to Akinlalu, the team was ambushed by armed assailants believed to be connected to the reported bandit activity. During the sudden attack, two service rifles belonging to the corps were taken by the attackers.”

The statement disclosed that reinforcements were immediately deployed to the area after reports of the ambush reached the Amotekun Command in Ile-Ife.

The backup team, upon approaching Akinlalu, made efforts to engage peacefully, including plans to visit the traditional ruler of the community.

“However, at the T-junction leading into Akinlalu, the road was found barricaded by the assailants. The attackers allegedly opened fire on the reinforcement team without warning, resulting in a prolonged gun battle that lasted for more than an hour.

“The operatives fought bravely and were able to overpower the hoodlums after an intense exchange of fire. Three lives were lost during the encounter, and three suspects were arrested, while others fled with injuries,” the statement added.

In a follow-up operation, Amotekun personnel reportedly recovered the two stolen firearms as well as force uniforms and berets used by the attackers to impersonate security operatives.

The recovered items were found in a hideout suspected to belong to the ambushers.

The Osun Amotekun Corps Commander Adekunle Isaac Omoyele while condemning the attack, vowed that the security outfit would not be deterred by criminal elements seeking to destabilise the state.

He added that the corps remains committed to protecting lives and

property in all parts of the state and urged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing useful information.

“This cowardly ambush will not deter our operatives from carrying out their duties. The safety and security of our people remain our utmost priority, and we will continue to pursue and dismantle all criminal networks in Osun.

“The success of security operations depends on public collaboration. We encourage residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities in their communities,” Omoyele stressed.
